Stepping Outside of the Box

Stepping Outside of the Box-2

By: Shea Harris

Charlotte is one of the most popular cities for young professionals to begin/continue their career. After speaking to many of my peers, I noticed those who were raised in Charlotte have a certain mentality. Some of us do not know how to leave the nest and return at a later date. I can honestly say I was one of those individuals.

I was so adamant on returning to Charlotte after spending one year in Durham (even though I knew The City wasn’t well known for Clinical Research). Every job I looked at required years of experience or multiple degrees. After numerous rejections, I started looking outside of North Carolina in order to further my career.

I started applying to jobs in Illinois, South Carolina, Florida, Texas and even California. I had to make sure I could step outside of my comfort zone and challenge myself. I needed to know I could live my life for me and not put it on hold. It was important to prove to myself that I could do this. Charlotte was a safe haven for me and there was no way I could further my career if I moved back there. I’ve only been in the Clinical Research industry for a year and a half so I know there are still things to learn. Charlotte is a city based off of business and banking and there was no way I would be able to grow in the Clinical Research industry by moving back.

I knew I wanted better for me and my career so I had to be realistic. Although the Clinical Research hub is within the Raleigh/Durham area, I didn’t want to become stagnant. I wanted to grow in my career mentally and financially. I didn’t expect to leave the area in the short amount of time, but it had to be done in order for me to fully become independent.

Once I realized the full potential I could reach in this industry, I took a giant leap of faith to accept my job offer in Miami, FL. I want to encourage you to step outside of your comfort zone and go for what you want. It’s okay to be nervous about the unknown, but when everything comes into fruition I promise you it’s the best reward.

Are you struggling with moving into the next chapter of your life? Do you want to reach your full potential? Let me know below, I’d love to know!

  1. Shea let me start by saying I’m so proud of you! I’ve also been experiencing the feeling of wanting to leave Charlotte .. Well NC all together!. It’s just difficult when you have your dad in your ear saying but that’s not safe or what family do you have there lol I have a job here that encompasses many opportunities so I’m just waiting on my moment to transfer to another location out of NC .
